On December 3, 2003, Protocol Professionals helped to coordinate a special luncheon at the new Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The event welcomed His Excellency Kofi Annan, UN Secretary-General and Mrs. Annan and was co-hosted by the daughter of the late Walt Disney, Diane Disney Miller and Heidi Kuhn, founder of Roots of Peace. The purpose of the luncheon was to address the issue of landmines.

Roots of Peace is a humanitarian non-profit organization launched by Founder, Heidi Kuhn in the presence of Mrs. Nane Annan at another event coordinated by Protocol Professionals, Inc., in April 1998. The original vision of this non-profit organization was to convert swords to plowshares—replacing the terror of landmines with bountiful fields. Today, “Roots of Peace” operates in four countries actively demining some of the most heavily mined area of the world and returning former minefields into productive agricultural use: rice in Cambodia, grapes in Afghanistan, orchards in Croatia, and wheat in Iraq.

“You have turned mines to vines by replacing seeds of destruction with seeds of life…and you have shown the world that even with modest beginnings, a partnership backed up by persistence can make a real difference,” said UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. In partnership with the UN Mine Action Services, the Mines to Vines initiative replaced the scourge of landmines with grapes and raisins by removing over 100,000 landmines and other remnants of war in the Shomali Plains north of Kabul, Afghanistan.
